Scholarships

Scholarships provide private lessons with a professional musician or music educator to selected music students who are new to private study (less than 25 hours), live in the 5 county greater Milwaukee area, and whose family is in need of a financial helping hand. On Audition Day, students participate in a workshop on Audition and Performance Preparation and enjoy a performance by winners of the High School Competition.

Students, if you want to be part of this program, ask your teacher for their recommendation.

Music teachers, if you have students who would benefit from this program, we encourage you to make this application available to those students.

Eligibility

  • Student is already playing an instrument and going into grades 4-11 the following school year (band or orchestra instruments, piano and guitar)

  • OR Student is already singing and going into grades 8-12 the following school year

  • Family can demonstrate financial need (CIVIC MUSIC will determine this from the application)

  • Family lives in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee or Racine County

  • Student is not new to their musical studies, but new to regular private music lessons on this instrument/voice (i.e. less than 25 hours of private lessons taken previously)

Application Process

Students must be recommended by a teacher. (Parents and students may certainly ask their teacher for that recommendation!) Students, parents and recommending teachers need to work together to complete the application. Please make sure to give yourself enough lead time when preparing it. Click on either purple button above. Print out the application and follow the instructions included. If you choose to pay your application fee online, click the pink button.

Audition and Interview

  • Program Orientation

  • Audition and Recital Preparation Workshop

  • Recital Performance by one or more of our High School Showcase Recital winners

  • Audition/Interview (5 minutes) before a panel of two music educators

Final Recitals

As a culminating experience to the year of lessons, students perform on a year-end recital showcasing each participant in a solo performance for a live audience.

Year 2 and 3

The opportunity for advancement to Year 2 and Year 3 lessons is available only to Year 1 students who earn their private teacher’s recommendation. Teachers will be asked for their recommendations in March. We will notify you in April if you have been recommended. Please do not apply before we send you the application. Your May 4 recital performance will serve as your audition for the additional scholarship.
